Let \(\mathcal F\) be the variety of full flags in \(\mathbb{C}^n\). The group \(G=\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})\) acts on \(\mathcal F\). Let \(u\) be a unipotent element in \(G\) and let \({\mathcal F}_u\) be the subvariety of \(\mathcal F\) consisting of all flags fixed by \(u\). Let \(u\) be in Jordan form and let \(\lambda\) be the partition of \(n\) that gives the sizes of the Jordan blocks of \(u\). Then the irreducible components of \({\mathcal F}_u\) can be indexed by the elements of a certain right cell \(C^\lambda\) in the symmetric group \(S_n\). The author gives characterizations of \(C^\lambda\) involving the variety of Borel subgroups of \(G\) and standard Young tableaux. He considers a certain involution in \({\mathcal F}_u\), determines its action on the set of irreducible components of \({\mathcal F}_u\), and relates this involution to an involution of the generic Hecke algebra of type \(A_{n-1}\) defined by Mathas.
