A short curriculum vitae of F. P. Cantelli (1875-1966) is given. His name is connected with that of E. Borel (1871-1956) by the `lemma of Borel- Cantelli', but their concepts of probability are different. The papers of Cantelli in the years 1916-1917 about the possibility of defining probability as limiting form of relative frequencies and his abstract theory have been strongly discussed in Italy. His neoclassical concept of probability has been reconsidered by R. von Mises in 1936. This contribution and a remark by Cantelli are to be found in the Giornale dell'Istituto Italiano degli Attuari 3, 235-255.
