One virtue of the proposed method is the acceleration of computation of steady state solutions of first-order hyperbolic problems. As a model problem is discussed the first-order system \(V_ t=-V_ x\), \(0 \leq x \leq 2 \pi\), \(0 \leq t\), \(V(x,0)=f(x)\), \(V(0,t)=1\), which has a steady state solution \(V(x,t)=1\) for \(t \geq 2\pi\) independent of the initial state \(f(x)\). The described acceleration method is based on the general idea to increase the effective time step. To this end a new version of the residual smoother, called implicit-explicit residual smoother, is developed. The presented numerical experiments show considerable reduction in number of iterations needed to reach a steady state solution.
