The author is interested in algebraic numbers on the unit circle whose certain integral powers sum to zero and in algebraic numbers which are roots of (not necessarily irreducible) polynomials with positive rational coefficients. He obtained several interesting results in both directions and showed that these questions are related. In particular, he shows that the set of algebraic numbers on the unit circle (which are not roots of unity) whose certain integral powers sum to zero is dense on the unit circle. He also shows that if \(\alpha\) is a root of an irreducible rational polynomial whose Galois group contains the full alternating group then \(\alpha\) is a root of a polynomial with positive rational coefficients precisely when none of its conjugates is a positive real number.
