Let \(F\) be a local field of characteristic 0, and let \(\overline{\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)}\) be the metaplectic double cover of \(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)\). This paper extends the Langlands-Shahidi method on Shahidi local coefficients and its applications for quasi-split connected reductive linear algebraic groups to the case of \(\overline{\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)}\). Among general covering groups, \(\overline{\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)}\) has a special feature, that is, the inverse image of a commutative subgroup of \(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)\) is still commutative, which automatically implies that the irreducible representations of the inverse image of the maximal torus of \(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)\) are one dimensional. This is the reason that a Whittaker model for principal series representation of \(\overline{\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)}\) is unique. This uniqueness of Whittaker model for any irreducible admissible genuine representation, which doesn't hold for general covering groups, is proved by the author in [Pac. J. Math. 232, No. 2, 453--469 (2007; Zbl 1221.11130)]. This uniqueness of the Whittaker model plays a key role in defining Shahidi local coefficients and the generalization of Langlands-Shahidi method to \(\overline{\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)}\). Explicitly, the author first defines a \(\overline{\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)}\)-analog of Shahidi local coefficients using the uniqueness of Whittaker model, and then defines local gamma factors (as ratios of local coefficients) which are proved to be multiplicative and satisfy the crude global functional equation. Then, the author computes these gamma factors in many cases and obtain explicit formulas for Plancherel measures, and uses these computations to prove some irreducibility theorems for parabolic induction on the metaplectic groups. In particular, the author shows that all principal series representations induced from unitary characters are irreducible, and the parabolic induction from unitary supercuspidal representation of the Siegel parabolic subgroup of \(\overline{\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)}\) is irreducible if and only if a certain parabolic induction on \(\mathrm{SO}_{2n+1}(F)\) is irreducible.
