Let \(\mathbb{F}\) be a field of characteristic \(p>0\), \(H\) a finite group and \(V\) a finite-dimensional \(\mathbb{F} H\)-module with radical \(\text{rad}_V(H)\) and socle \(S_V(H)\). The authors define the Fitting submodule \(F_V(H)\) of \(V\) in the following steps: Let \(C^*_H(V)\) denote the normal subgroup of \(H\) such that \(C^*_H(V)/C_H(V)=O_p(H/C_H(V))\). Then \(V\) is called \(H\)-reduced if \(C^*_H(V)=C_H(V)\). For \(N\trianglelefteq H\), \(V\) is called \(N\)-quasisimple if \(V\) is \(H\)-reduced, \(V/\text{rad}_V(H)\) is simple, \(V=[V,N]\) and \(N=C^*_N(\text{rad}_V(H))\). A submodule \(W\) of \(V\) is called a component of \(V\) if either \(W\) is simple with \([W,F^*(H)]\neq 0\), or \(W\) is \(C_{F^*(H)}(S_V(H))\)-quasisimple. Then \(F_V(H)\) is defined as the sum of all components of \(V\). The authors show that the Fitting submodule \(F_V(H)\) has properties similar to those of the generalized Fitting subgroup \(F^*(H)\). One of their main results says that, if \(V\) is faithful and \(H\)-reduced then so are \(F_V(H)\) and \(F_V(H)/\text{rad}_{F_V(H)}(H)\).
