The paper under review surveys some of the surviving correspondence of the Italian mathematician Giusto Bellavitis (1803--1880). The correspondence is presented not only as providing an insight into Bellavitis' own mathematical background and interests, but also as giving a window onto the Venetian mathematical culture of the early-mid-nineteenth century. Bellavitis' political views and those of his correspondents are highlighted, particularly in connection with the Third Italian War of Independence of 1866. Special attention is given to Bellavitis' exchanges with Luigi Cremona (1830--1903) and Angelo Genocchi (1817--1889). For the entire collection see [Zbl 1411.01011].
