The authors study the defocusing energy-critical Schrödinger equation of fourth order \[ iu_t+\triangle^2u=-|u|^{\frac{8}{d-4}}u, \;\;\text{in} \;\;\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}^d, \] under the initial condition \(u(0,x)=u_0(x)\) in \(\mathbb{R}^d\). It turns out that if there exists a solution \(u:I\times \mathbb{R}^d\to \mathbb{C}\) for \(d\geq 9\) with finite energy \(E\) for the considered problem, then \(I=\mathbb{R}\) , and \[ \int\limits_{\mathbb{R}}\int\limits_{\mathbb{R}^d}|u(t,x)|^{\frac{2(d+4)}{d-4}}dxdt\leq C(E)<\infty . \] Other interesting results are the existence and non-existence of blow-up solutions, negative regularity in global case, and existence and absence of soliton-like solutions. An important conclusion is that any finite energy solution is global and scatters both forward and backward in time in dimensions \(d\geq 9\).
