The authors consider an inverse problem for the wave equation with potential \(q\) and absorption coefficient \(a\): \[ \left( \partial_t^2 -\Delta+a(x) \partial_t +q(x)\right) u = 0, \qquad u(\cdot, 0)= \partial_t u(\cdot, 0)=0\] with \(u=f\) on the boundary, where the domain is compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary in dimension \(n\geq 2\). They consider the associated Dirichlet to Neumann map \[\Lambda_{a,q}(f)=\partial_{\nu} u\] and are able to show that the dispersion term \(q\) and absorption coefficient \(a\) depend Hölder stably on \(\Lambda_{a,q}\), which implies uniqueness. The authors use a dynamical approach to the anisotropic wave equation by probing the medium with real geometric optics solutions of the wave equation. They then measure responses of the medium on the other side of the boundary.
