    The author and \textit{Y. Se-ashi} [cf. Proc. Jap. Acad., Ser A 58, 163-166 (1982; Zbl 0511.53067)] constructed a totally geodesic hermitian symmetric submanifold (t.g.h.s.) M(p) of a Kähler manifold M through p. A bounded domain D in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\) is always a Kähler manifold with the Bergman metric. In this paper the author studies a t.g.h.s. submanifold D(p). Let \({\mathfrak g}(D)\) be the Lie algebra of Aut(D) and let \({\mathfrak g}(D)^ c\) be its complexification. For each \(x\in {\mathfrak g}(D), X^*\) means the vector field on D generated by \(\{\) exp tX\(\}\) \({}_{t\in {\mathbb{R}}}\). Let \(b^ 0(p)=\{Z\in {\mathfrak g}(D)^ c| Z^*_ p=0\}\) for \(p\in D\). For a vector field \(\xi\) satisfying \(\xi_ p=0\) one defines an endomorphism \({\mathcal A}_{\xi}\) of \(T_ p(D)\) by \({\mathcal A}_{\xi}(v)=[\xi,\zeta]_ p\), where \(v\in T_ p(D)\) and \(\zeta\) is a vector field such that \(\zeta_ p=v\). The author considers the following conditions: (A.1) For any point p of D, \(T_ p(D)=\{Z^*_ p| Z\in {\mathfrak g}(D)^ c\}\); \((A.2)_ p There\) exists an element e of \(b^ 0(p)\) satisfying \({\mathcal A}_{e^*}=1.\) One proves the following theorems: (I) Assume that a bounded domain D satisfies (A.1). Then for any p,p'\(\in D, D(p)\) and D(p') are holomorphically isomorphic to each other. (II) Assume that a bounded domain D satisfies \((A.2)_ p\). Then D(p) is a maximal hermitian symmetric submanifold of D through p.
