Let \(\phi\) be an inner function \((| \phi(z)|<1\), for \(| z|<1\) and \(| \phi(e^{it})| =1\), a.e.) and let \(frac{1}{2}<p<1\). The author considers the question: When is \(\phi '\in H^ p?\) If \(\phi\) (z) is a Blaschke product with zeros \(\{a_ k\}\), the condition \(\sum(1-| a_ n|)^{1-p}<\infty\) is sufficient; [\textit{D. Protas}, Mich. Math. J. 20, 393-396 (1973; Zbl 0273.30031)]. In general, \(\phi '\in H^ p\) if and only if there exists an \(\alpha\), \(| \alpha |<1\), such that \(\phi -\alpha)/(1-{\bar \alpha}\phi)\) is a Blaschke product with zeros \(\{a_ k\}\) satisfying \(\sum(1-| a_ k|)^{1-p}<\infty;\) [\textit{P. R. Ahern}, Indiana Univ. Math. J. 28, 311-347 (1979; Zbl 0415.30022)]. In the present paper, the author notes that if B is a Blaschke product whose zeros \(\{a_ k\}\) form an interpolating sequence, then \(B'\in H^ p\) if and only if \(\sum(1-| a_ k|)^{1-p}<\infty;\) and then he shows how to construct, for any inner function \(\phi\), an interpolating Blaschke product B such that \(\phi '\in H^ p\) if and only if \(B'\in H^ p.\) In Am. J. Math. 92, 332-342 (1970; Zbl 0197.392), \textit{P. R. Ahern} and the reviewer showed that certain properties of the derivative of an inner function \(\phi\) imply, or are implied by, related (stronger) properties of all the functions in the subspace \((\phi H^ 2)^{\perp}\) of \(H^ 2\). In the present paper, the author shows that if \(2/3<p<1\), then \(\phi '\in H^ p\) if and only if \(f'\in H^{2p/(p+2)},\) for all \(f\in(\phi H^ 2)^{\perp}.\) Results that apply for all the way down to \(frac{1}{2}\) are obtained using a suitable generalization of \((\phi H^ 2)^{\perp}\), with \(H^ 2\) replaced by \(H^ n\), for n large, and a result of \textit{S. V. Khrushchev, N. K. Nikol'skij} and \textit{B. S. Pavlov} [Complex analysis and spectral theory, Semin. Leningrad 1979/80, Lect. Notes Math. 864, 214-335 (1981; Zbl 0466.46018)].
