    A module is said to be uniserial if its submodules form a chain under inclusion. Over an almost maximal valuation domain, the uniserial R- modules are exactly those of the form J/I where \(I\prec J\) are R- submodules of the field Q of quotients of R. From now on, R denotes a valuation ring (commutative uniserial ring). Every finitely generated R- module T has a chain \(0=T_ 0\prec T_ 1\prec...\prec T_ n=T\) of pure submodules with cyclic factors. Every submodule T of a finite direct sum of uniserial R-modules has a similar chain with uniserial factors. If T is pure in a finite direct sum of uniserials, then it is itself a direct sum of uniserials. Infinite direct sums of uniserials are also studied; it is shown that every summand is again a direct sum of uniserials. A torsion R-module is constructed (for a suitable valuation domain R) which fails to contain any pure uniserial submodule. Heights of elements in R- modules are defined as uniserial modules of certain forms.
