We will refer to several papers of \textit{A. Connes} and the first author of the paper under review, whom we call CM in this review. Connes' general definition of cyclic cohomology applies to a wide class of settings. In particular, computing the local index formula for transversely hypoelliptic operators on foliations led to a cyclic cohomology apparatus for Hopf algebras [CM, Commun. Math. Phys. 198, No. 1, 199-246 (1998; Zbl 0940.58005)]. Study of the iterated commutator operations involved in the local index formula [CM, Geom. Funct. Anal. 5, No. 2, 174-243 (1995; Zbl 0960.46048)] revealed the existence of a universal Hopf algebra \(H_n\). The calculation turned out to be governed by the cyclic cohomology of a specific type of cyclic module structure for Hopf algebras. The solution to the transverse index problem [CM, Commun. Math. Phys., loc. cit.] was based on finding an explicit isomorphism between the periodic cyclic cohomology of the cyclic module for \(H_n\) and the Gelfand-Fuks cohomology of the Lie algebra of formal vector fields on \(\mathbb{R}^n\). In the paper under review, the authors present a direct, i.e., free of Lie algebras, method for computing the periodic cyclic cohomology of a class of Hopf algebras related to transverse symmetry in codimension 1. Besides \(H_1\), this class includes the Schwarzian quotient \(H_{1s}\) of \(H_1\), which plays a role in the universal deformation formula based on Rankin-Cohen brackets on modular forms [CM, Mosc. Math. J. 4, No. 1, 111-130 (2004; Zbl 1122.11024)], as well as the extended version of the well-known Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra related to the renormalization of divergences in quantum field theory. The class also includes cyclic covers of these Hopf algebras. The discussion employs two basic tools. One is the construction of bicocyclic modules for a class of bicrossed product Hopf algebras, which allows the computation of their Hopf cyclic cohomology by means of an Eilenberg-Zilber theorem for bi-paracyclic modules. The other is a Cartan homotopy formula for the Hopf cyclic cohomology of coalgebras with coefficients in SAYD modules.
