The present paper is devoted to the study of the Volterra hierarchy by means of a new quantisation approach based on the notion of quantisation ideals proposed by \textit{A. V. Mikhailov} [Russ. Math. Surv. 75, No. 5, 978--980 (2020; Zbl 1500.37044); translation from Usp. Mat. Nauk 75, No. 5, 199--200 (2020)]. Within this method of quantisation, the starting point is a dynamical system defined on a free associative algebra \(\mathfrak{A}\) with a finite (or infinite) number of multiplicative generators. The dynamical system defines a derivation \(\partial_t : \mathfrak{A} \to \mathfrak{A}\). In this setting, quantisation is understood as a reduction of the dynamical system on \(\mathfrak{A}\) to the system defined on the quotient algebra \(\mathfrak{A}_\mathfrak{J} = \mathfrak{A}/\mathfrak{J}\) (quantised algebra) over a two-sided ideal \(\mathfrak{J} \subset \mathfrak{A}\) (quantisation ideal) satisfying the following properties: \begin{itemize} \item[1.] \(\mathfrak{J}\) is \(\partial_t\)-stable, namely \(\partial_t (\mathfrak{J}) \subset \mathfrak{J}\); \item[2.] \(\mathfrak{A}_\mathfrak{J}\) admits an additive basis of normally ordered monomials. \end{itemize} Within this framework, the authors investigate the quantisation problem for the integrable non-abelian Volterra system and its hierarchy of symmetries. In particular, they prove that the non-abelian Volterra system together with the hierarchy of its symmetries admits a deformation quantisation. Moreover, all odd-degree symmetries of the Volterra hierarchy are shown to admit also a non-deformation quantisation. The authors also investigate periodic reductions of the Volterra hierarchy and prove the super-integrability of the corresponding quantum systems. It is also proved that the Volterra system with period \(3\) admits a bi-quantum structure, the latter understood as the quantum deformation of its classical bi-Hamiltonian structure. The paper concludes with a summary of the obtained results and a discussion on some open problems related to the application of this newly developed method of quantisation.
