Let \(\mathcal{P}\) denote the set of norms on \(\ell_1\) that are equivalent to the canonical norm \(\|\cdot\|_1\), and let \(\mathcal{A}\) denote the norms \(\|\cdot\|\) in \(\mathcal{P}\) such that \((\ell_1,\|\cdot\|)\) has the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. In [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl.\ 68, No.\ 8, A, 2303--2308 (2008; Zbl 1151.46006)], \textit{P.-K.\ Lin} showed that the set \(\mathcal{A}\) is nonempty. With \(|\!|\!| \cdot |\!|\!|\) denoting Lin's renorming of \(\ell_1\) with the fixed point property, the authors prove that, if \(p(\cdot)\in \mathcal{P}\) satisfies \[ \limsup_n p(x_n+x) = \limsup_n p(x_n) + p(x) \] for all \(\sigma(\ell_1,c_0)\)-null sequences \((x_n)\) and all \(x\in\ell_1\), then the norm \(p(\cdot) + \lambda |\!|\!| \cdot |\!|\!|\) has the fixed point property for every \(\lambda>0\). Therefore the set \(\mathcal{A}\) contains nontrivial rays. The authors also show that, for every \(K>1\), there exists an equivalent norm \(\|\cdot\|\) on \(\ell_1\) such that the Banach-Mazur distance between \((\ell_1, \|\cdot\|)\) and \((\ell_1, |\!|\!| \cdot |\!|\!| )\) is less than \(K\) but \((\ell_1, \|\cdot\|)\) fails to have the fixed point property. Thus Lin's norm fails to produce stability of the fixed point property, and the authors ask if any equivalent norm on \(\ell_1\) produces stability of the fixed point property. Finally, the authors consider some equivalent metrics on \(\mathcal{P}\) and study some topological properties of \(\mathcal{A}\) with respect to these metrics.
