The authors study toric face rings associated to monoidal complexes. The main result is a generalization of Hochster's formulas for the graded Betti numbers of a Stanley-Reisner ring [\textit{M. Hochster}, in: Ring Theory II, Proc. 2nd Okla. Conf. 1975, 171--223 (1977; Zbl 0351.13009)] and for graded Betti numbers of affine monoid rings by \textit{E. Miller} and \textit{B. Sturmfels} [Combinatorial commutative algebra, Graduate Texts in Mathematics 227, New York, NY: Springer (2005; Zbl 1090.13001)] to toric face rings. Such a generalization has been possible for monoidal complexes that, roughly speaking, can be embedded into a space \(\mathbb{Q}^d\). They provide a counterexample to show that full generality does not seem possible.
