In this work the authors presented a phenomenological approach to phase transition in classical field theory. For this, they utilize balance equations, derived by the same authors [ibid. 25, 1459-1468 (1987; Zbl 0624.73001)] of two different media \(C_ 1\) and \(C_ 2\) separated by the surface S. The balance equations comprise both the volume and surface S. Furthermore, they derived a set of constitutive equations for both volume and surface quantities. Some restrictions on these constitutive relations have been imposed through the thermodynamical inequalities. Finally, by substituting these constitutive relations into the balance equations and jump conditions, the authors obtained a boundary value problem for phase transitions modelled as a continuum with an interface. This work is quite interesting and might be useful for those researchers working on phase transition problems.
