The aim of the paper is two-fold. In the first place, by using instead of the power series expansion for \(\arcsin x\), that of \((\arcsin x)^ 2\), a new proof is given of the classical result \(\zeta(2)= \pi^ 2/6\), which is even shorter than the elementary proof obtained by \textit{B. R. Choe} [Am. Math. Mon. 94, 662-663 (1987; Zbl 0624.40001)]. Using this idea the author also gives, in particular, five different series representations for \(\zeta(3)\). The main purpose of the paper is, however, to derive a series representation for the values of the zeta function at odd integers, \(\zeta(2n+1)\), \(n=1,2,\dots\), which simplifies very much the representation given by \textit{J. A. Ewell} [Can. Math. Bull. 34, 60-66 (1991; Zbl 0731.11048)]. A basic ingredient for the proof is a result obtained by the reviewer [Math. Comput. 47, 347-350 (1986; Zbl 0603.10040)] on the expansions of the derivatives of the zeta function at negative even integers, \(\zeta(- 2n)\), \(n=1,2,\dots\;\). The reader may enjoy also the recent papers by the reviewer in [J. Math. Phys. 34, 3222-3226 (1993; Zbl 0779.11037) and in J. Math. Phys. and Phys. Lett. B (in press)], where brand new formulas in the same direction (concerning the Epstein-Hurwitz zeta function) have been derived.
