Given a field \(\Lambda\) and a Lie algebra \(L\) over \(\Lambda\), crossed \(L\)-modules are generalizations of crossed modules for groups and also the concepts of ideals and \(L\)-modules. Formally, a crossed \(L\)-module is defined to be a Lie algebra \(M\) over \(\Lambda\) endowed with two Lie algebra homomorphisms \(\varphi: L \to\mathrm{Der}(M)\), \(\varphi(l)(m) =: ^lm\), and \(\partial : M \to L\), satisfying the following conditions: \[ \partial(^lm) = [l, \partial(m)]\quad \text{and} \quad ^{\partial(m)}(m') = [m, m'], \] for all \(l \in L\), \(m, m' \in M\). In the paper under review, the author studies universal central extensions of crossed modules for a Lie algebra. A general theory of central extensions in abelian and semi-abelian categories have been developed in [\textit{G. Janelidze} and \textit{G. M. Kelly}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 97, No. 2, 135--161 (1994; Zbl 0813.18001)] and [\textit{J. M. Casas} and \textit{T. Van der Linden}, Appl. Categ. Struct. 22, No. 1, 253--268 (2014; Zbl 1358.18005)], respectively. In this paper however, the author is not able to directly use the general theory, as the category of crossed modules for a fixed Lie algebra is not semi-abelian. Instead, the author uses non-abelian tensor products of Lie algebras. As a consequence, the author is able to give a description of Schur multiplier of a pair of Lie algebras in terms of a Hopf-type formula.
