The authors describe a possibility to represent a modular lattice of finite length by a ''diagram'' consisting of the join-irreducible elements of the lattice regarded as a partially ordered set together with certain subsets (''dotted lines''). The main result is that any modular lattice of finite length may be recovered from its diagram. Some examples of submodule lattices and their diagrams are given. Usually the diagram has significantly fewer elements than the lattice, nevertheless the number of dotted lines may exceed the number of elements of the lattice.
