    Let \(X\) be a real Banach space with the unit sphere \(S(X)\). The following quantities are studied: \[ \begin{aligned} \alpha_\varepsilon (X)&= \sup\{x+\varepsilon y\hat{2} +x-\varepsilon y\hat{2}\mid x\in S(X)\},\\ \beta_\varepsilon (X)&= \inf\{x+\varepsilon y\hat{2} +x-\varepsilon y\hat{2}\mid x\in S(X)\},\\ E_\varepsilon(X)&=\sup\{ \alpha_\varepsilon(x)\mid x\in S(X)\},\\ e_\varepsilon(X)&=\inf\{ \alpha_\varepsilon(x)\mid x\in S(X)\},\\ F_\varepsilon(X)&=\sup\{ \beta_\varepsilon(x)\mid x\in S(X)\},\\ f_\varepsilon(X)&=\inf\{ \beta_\varepsilon(x)\mid x\in S(X)\}.\end{aligned} \] The main result says that if \(E_\varepsilon(X)< 2 +2 \varepsilon + \varepsilon^2/2\) for some \(0\leq \varepsilon\leq 1\), then \(X\) has a normal structure of convex sets. Moreover, the quantities above are calculated or estimated for some \(L^p\) spaces.
