The paper gives motivations for the definition introduced by the authors in a previous paper. Also, it studies the effect of the Schur transformation on minimal selfadjoint realizations. In the first section, the general problem is presented, and in the second one, the definition of the Schur transformation is given in three special cases. In the third section, the basic interpolation problem for generalized Nevanlinna functions is analysed. The basic interpolation problem is one of the analytic motivations for the Schur transformation of Nevanlinna functions, while other results of the paper show the geometrical features of the definition of the Schur transformation. In the following two sections of the paper, selfadjoint realizations of the Schur transformation are analysed, namely, the problem how to derive from the minimal selfadjoint realization of a Nevanlinna function the minimal selfadjoint realization of its Schur transform. The selfadjoint realization of the composite Schur transform is analysed in the sixth section, while in the seventh section, Schur sequences are introduced by the Schur transform procedure and a Schur algorithm is derived. The last section of the paper concerns the effect of the Schur transform on the coisometric and unitary realizations of generalized Schur functions in the setting of reproducing kernel Pontryagin spaces.
