This is a philosophical and methodological discussion: the author argues for the point of view which considers fuzzy sets as a reasonable mathematical model for vagueness phenomena, in distinction to uncertainty phenomena explained, e.g., by probability theory. And he argues that there are important applicational areas which need fuzzy sets techniques for a suitable mathematical treatment.
