Locally conformal symplectic (l.c.s. for short) manifolds were introduced in [\textit{I. Vaisman}, Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 8, 521--536 (1985; Zbl 0585.53030)]. This is a generalisation of the notion of a symplectic manifold, where the symplectic two-form is only locally defined, and where the forms defined on two open subsets is only required to coincide up to a positive scalar multiple on the intersection. The notions of Lagrangian and coisotropic submanifolds automatically generalise to the case of an l.c.s.~manifold, since they are defined by local conditions that are invariant under rescalings of the symplectic form. The so-called integral coisotropic manifolds (a notion which includes Lagrangian submanifolds) have an unobstructed deformation theory [\textit{W. Ruan}, J. Symplectic Geom. 3, No. 2, 161--169 (2005; Zbl 1094.53052)]. However, as noted in [\textit{M. Zambon}, Differ. Geom. Appl. 26, No. 6, 635--637 (2008; Zbl 1153.53323)], for a general coisotropic submanifold the deformation theory is very different. A systematic formal deformation theory was developed in [\textit{Y.-G. Oh} and \textit{J.-S. Park}, Invent. Math. 161, No. 2, 287--360 (2005; Zbl 1081.53066)]. This theory was used to show that the interesting example of a coisotropic four-torus studied by Zambon has an obstructed deformation theory. (This means that it has infinitesimal deformations that do not arise as actual deformations.) The present article generalises the aforementioned formal deformation theory to the case of a coisotropic submanifold of a general l.c.s.~manifold. First, the coisotropic condition is expressed for a submanifold that is \(C^1\)-close to a given coisotropic submanifold; this is very similar to the symplectic case. Second, a well-defined isomorphism class of a homotopy Lie algebroid is associated to any Hamiltonian isotopy class of a coisotropic submanifold -- this is a `bulk deformed' version of the homotopy Lie algebroid structure arising in the symplectic case. Roughly speaking, this is a homotopy Lie algebra structure on the `de Rham' complex of the null-fibres. The formal one-parameter deformations of the coisotropic submanifold arise as the solutions of an associated Maurer-Cartan equation. The main example examined by the authors is again the coisotropic four-torus studied by Zambon. It is shown that this coisotropic submanifold has an obstructed deformation theory, even when considering the larger class of deformations allowed in the setting of l.c.s.~manifolds. In the course of developing their theory, the authors also explore the standard neighbourhood theorem of a coisotropic submanifold of an l.c.s.~manifold, as well as Moser's trick in this setting.
