Summary: The Jacobi-Stirling numbers and the Legendre-Stirling numbers of the first and second kind were first introduced by \textit{W. N. Everitt}, \textit{L. L. Littlejohn} and \textit{R. Wellman} [J. Comput. Appl. Math. 148, No. 1, 213--238 (2002; Zbl 1014.33003)], and \textit{W. N. Everitt} et al. [ibid. 208, No. 1, 29--56 (2007; Zbl 1119.33009)] in the spectral theory. In this paper we note that Jacobi-Stirling numbers and Legendre-Stirling numbers are specializations of elementary and complete symmetric functions. We then study combinatorial interpretations of this specialization and obtain new combinatorial interpretations of the Jacobi-Stirling and Legendre-Stirling numbers.
