\textit{B. H. Gross} and \textit{D. B. Zagier} in [Invent. Math. 84, 225--320 (1986; Zbl 0608.14019)] introduced a formula which is crucial for the study of the derivative of the \(L\)-series of abelian varieties, and \textit{J. L. Waldspurger} [Compos. Math. 54, 173--242 (1985; Zbl 0567.10021)] introduced a formula for the value at the center of symmetry of certain automorphic \(L\)-function with functional equation. Both tools are maybe the most important analytic tools known at present for studying the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer. There are a lot of generalizations of the above results known as Gross-Zagier formulas and Waldspurger formulas, in particular the book by \textit{X. Yuan} et al. [The Gross-Zagier formula on Shimura curves. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press (2013; Zbl 1272.11082)] contains maybe the most general case of Gross-Zagier formula at the date of publication. The above formulas sometimes are not so explicit for applications to the arithmetic of abelian varieties and one needs explicit versions, for example see the work of \textit{M. Bertolini} and \textit{H. Darmon} [Ann. Math. (2) 146, No. 1, 111--147 (1997; Zbl 1029.11027)]. The authors of the paper under review give explicit versions of Gross-Zagier and Waldspurger formulas following the general formulas given in [\textit{T. D. Browning} and \textit{A. Haynes}, Int. J. Number Theory 9, No. 2, 481--486 (2013; Zbl 1271.11082)]. These explicit formulas have applications in the arithmetic of abelian varieties in the recent works of \textit{J. Coates} et al. [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 110, No. 2, 357--394 (2015; Zbl 1311.11046)], the third author [Camb. J. Math. 2, No. 1, 117--161 (2014; Zbl 1303.11067)], and third author et al. [``Genus periods, genus points and congruent number problem'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1411.4728}]. In particular, reproducing the words of the authors in the abstract, they ``give an explicit Gross-Zagier formula which relates the height of an explicitly constructed Heegner point to the derivative central value of a Rankin \(L\)-series. An explicit form of the Waldspurger formula is also given''.
