Let \(D\) be a division ring with centre \(F\) and \(M\) a locally soluble, maximal subgroup of the multiplicative group \(D^*\) of \(D\) whose derived subgroup \(M'\) is algebraic over \(F\). The authors' main theorem is that if \(M\) is non-Abelian, then \(D\) has finite dimension over \(F\); whence every locally soluble subgroup of \(D^*\) is soluble. From this theorem the authors derive the following. If \(M\) is actually locally nilpotent, then \(M\) is the multiplicative group of some maximal subfield of \(D\). In passing the authors also show that if \(D^*\) is locally soluble for some division ring \(D\), then \(D\) is a field. All these results are generalizations of known results, all carefully stated and referenced in this paper. For example, the authors' main result, with the stronger hypothesis that \(M\) is algebraic over \(F\), was proved by \textit{S. Akbari}, \textit{R. Ebrahimian}, \textit{H. Momenaee Kermani} and \textit{A. Salehi Golsefidy} [in J. Algebra 259, No. 1, 201-225 (2003; Zbl 1016.20031)] and the commutativity of \(D\) if \(D^*\) is soluble is a very well-known, very old result (from 1950) of L. K. Hua.
