Consider a compact, oriented manifold \(X\) and assume that \(\omega\) is a symplectic form on \(X\) that is compatible with the orientation. An almost complex structure \(J\) is tamed by \(\omega\) when the bilinear form \(\omega(.;J(.))\) is positive definite. The almost complex structure \(J\) is compatible with \(\omega\) when the above bilinear form is symmetric. The following Theorem is proved: Suppose that \(X\) is a compact, oriented \(4\)-dimensional manifold with \(b^{2+}=1\) and with a given symplectic form \(\omega\). A generic \(\omega\)-tamed almost complex structure on \(X\) is compatible with a symplectic form on \(X\). Moreover, the class in \(H^2(X;\mathbb{R})\) of this form can be taken to be that of \(\omega\) if the latter class comes from \(H^2(X;\mathbb{Q})\). First, the author studies a non-negative \(1\)-\(1\) current in order to obtain a symplectic form which is compatible with an almost complex structure chosen from a certain generic subset of those that are \(\omega\)-tamed. The proof of the main theorem is obtained in four steps. Then the author presents some known results about pseudoholomorphic subvarieties used in the proof of the theorem. He deals with the existence of \(J\)-holomorphic subvarieties, the properties of \(J\)-holomorphic subvarieties, and the deformation operator. Next he presents some facts about moduli spaces of \(J\)-holomorphic subvarieties. He is interested in the properties of these spaces and their constituent subvarieties when \(J\) is suitably generic. Then he obtains the proofs of the three propositions 1.1-1.3 used in the proof of the main theorem. In a quite long appendix, the author presents some properties of the generic almost complex structures, moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic maps, topologies of some spaces used in the proofs and the manifold structures of such spaces.
