The main goal of the paper is to extend Sweedler cohomology of a cocommutative Hopf algebra with coefficients in a commutative \(H\)-module algebra (introduced in [\textit{M. E. Sweedler}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 133, 205--239 (1968; Zbl 0164.03704)]), to the case of weak Hopf algebras in a monoidal category with equalizers. For a weak Hopf algebra \(H\) and a weak left \(H\)-module algebra (both in a monoidal category with equalizers), the authors define a cosimplicial complex of (usual, set-theoretic) groups, which makes it possible to define a Sweedler cohomology of \(H\) with coefficients in the \(H\)-module algebra. When \(H\) is a cocommutative (usual) Hopf algebra, then with a commutative left \(H\)-module algebra, this cosimplicial complex turns to be the one introduced by Sweedler, and the cohomologies coincide. Finally the authors prove that the second cohomology group classifies a weakened version of crossed products.
