The goal of the authors is to give a general framework for constructing model structures on pro-categories. This has been studied in [\textit{D. A. Edwards} and \textit{H. M. Hastings}, Cech and Steenrod homotopy theories with applications to geometric topology, Lecture Notes in Mathematics 542, Springer-Verlag, Berlin-Heidelberg-New York (1976; Zbl 0334.55001)] and [\textit{D. C. Isaksen}, Arone, Gregory (ed.) et al., Categorical decomposition techniques in algebraic topology (Isle of Skye, 2001), Prog. Math. 215, 179--198 (2004; Zbl 1049.18008)], but for most purposes, the class of strict weak equivalences in pro-\(\mathcal{C}\) is too small. Now, the notion of filtered model structure is given (Sect. 4), and the main theorem (5.15) states that every proper filtered model structure has a proper model structure. Section 6 is devoted to Quillen functors in this context. A few examples are given for the general theory, and then they focus on constructing \(G\)-equivariant homotopy theories when \(G\) is a profinite group (Sect. 7 and 8).
