The main object of the paper under review is an algebraic torus \(T\) defined over a global field \(F\). The author's goal is to generalize the ambiguous class number formula from the case \(T=\mathbb G_m\) (when it is none other than a classical formula of Chevalley) to an arbitrary torus. The obtained result is formulated in terms of the identity component of the Néron-Raynaud integral model of \(T\) over \(U=\text{Spec\,} O_{F,S}\), where \(S\) is any nonempty finite set of primes of \(F\) (containing all archimedean primes in the number field case). The general formula is illustrated by an example where \(T\) is a norm torus. The proofs are based on the use of the Nisnevich cohomology. Results of \textit{X.~Xarles} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 437, 167--179 (1993; Zbl 0764.14009)] are used in an essential way.
