Let \(A\) be an abelian variety defined over a number field \(k\), let \(X\) be a subgroup of the Mordell--Weil group \(A(k)\) and let \(P\in A(k)\) be a rational point. W. Gajda and E. Kowalski have asked whether \(P\) belongs to \(X\), provided that \((P\bmod \mathfrak p)\) belongs to \((X\bmod \mathfrak p)\) for a set of primes \(\mathfrak p\) of \(k\) of density 1. In the article under review, the author shows that this local to global principle indeed holds under some hypothesis on \(X\) and \(P\). In general, the answer to Gajda's and Kowalski's question has turned out to be negative. Counterexamples are due to P. Krason and the author (in preparation) and to \textit{A. Perucca} and the reviewer [C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 348, No. 1-2, 9--10 (2010; Zbl 1219.11089)].
