The author considers the question of which finite-dimensional Lie algebra \(L\) over a field \(k\) of any characteristic admits a nontrivial triangular Lie bialgebra structure, i.e., coming from a solution of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. (The definitions are slightly modified if \(k\) has characteristic two.) He shows that this is the case if \(L\) is nonnilpotent and \(k\) is algebraically closed. If \(L\) is nilpotent, \(k\) arbitrary, and \(L\) is not abelian and not a Heisenberg algebra (i.e. the center \(C(L)\) of \(L\) is one-dimensional and \([L,L]\subseteq C(L)\)), then the answer is also positive. If \(k\) s algebraically closed of characteristic not two, then \(L\) admits no nontrivial triangular Lie bialgebra structure if and only if it admits no such quasitriangular structure, and this happens if and only if \(L\) is either abelian or a three-dimensional nonabelian Heisenberg algebra. Finally if \(L\) is nonabelian, \(k\) algebraically closed of characteristic two, then \(L\) admits a nontrivial quasitriangular Lie bialgebra structure. Some relevant examples are discussed. [Reviewer's remarks: Some of the introductory comments on the infinite-dimensional case are not accurate. His reference [11] did establish such nontrivial structures on the Witt and Virasoro algebras of characteristic zero, but did not prove they were distinct, i.e., there are an infinite number of non-isomorphic such structures. This was done in his reference [12] by the reviewer].
