Let \(G\) be a linear algebraic group defined over a field \(k\) that has sufficiently many elements (for instance, \(k\) is infinite). It is shown that there is a finite dimensional simple (possibly non-associative) algebra \(A\) over \(k\) such that \(G\) is \(k\)-isomorphic to the algebraic group \(\Aut(A)\). So \(G(K)\) is isomorphic to \(\Aut_K(A\otimes_kK)\) for every field extension \(K| k\). Here a `simple algebra' has nontrivial multiplication and no proper two-sided ideals. When \(G\) is a finite abstract group a constructive proof is given.
