The authors give a local formula for the index of an order-zero elliptic Fourier integral operator determined by a contact diffeomorphism between the unit cotangent bundles of two smooth, closed, connected Riemannian manifolds \(X\) and \(Y\). The authors use the contact diffeomorphism to glue fiberwise spherical compactifications of the cotangent bundles of \(X\) and \(Y\) to form a manifold \(M\). They place a symplectic Lie algebroid structure over \(M\), and they generalize the Egorov theorem to show that the formal deformation associated to the symplectic Lie algebroid structure can be regarded as resulting from using the Fourier integral operator to glue the formal deformations of \(T^{*}X\) and \(T^{*}Y\) associated with the algebras of pseudodifferential operators. After identifying the index of the Fourier integral operator with a value of a trace defined on the formal deformation algebra, the authors derive the index formula from \textit{R. Nest} and \textit{B. Tsygan} [Asian J. Math. 5, 599-633 (2001; Zbl 1023.53060)]. The index formula in the paper under review generalizes the result obtained by \textit{C. Epstein} and \textit{R. Melrose} [Math. Res. Lett. 5, 363-381 (1998; Zbl 0929.58012)] in the case \(X=Y\).
