Given a toric variety \(X\) with associated fan \(\Sigma\) and the defining action of a torus \(T\), this paper compares the equivariant \(K\)-theory ring \(K^*_T(X)\) with the ring of integral piecewise Laurent polynomials on \(\Sigma\), introduced in [\textit{M. Harada} et al., Tohoku Math. J. (2) 68, No. 4, 487--513 (2016; Zbl 1360.55006)], as algebras over the coefficient ring \(K_T^*(\ast )\). First, the authors study toric varieties associated to fans in \(\mathbb{R}^2\). If the fan is incomplete, these algebras are isomorphic. If the fan is complete, there is an isomorphism of algebras if and only if the primitive generators of the rays of the fan span \(\mathbb{Z}^2\) as an abelian group. In particular, the isomorphism does not hold for fake weighted projective spaces with three weights which are not weighted projective spaces. The isomorphism is also established for smooth toric varieties and for toric varieties associated to singular fans with distant singular cones, that is, fans where any two different singular cones have intersection equal to \(\{ 0 \}\). Several interesting examples where this last condition holds are described. These results are proved by decomposing the toric variety as a union of two toric varieties associated to subfans whose union is the whole original fan and using the corresponding Mayer-Vietoris sequence in equivariant \(K\)-theory.
