The concept of iterated recollement (ladders) for triangulated categories was introduced by Beilinson, Ginsburg, and Schechtman [\textit{A. A. Beilinson} et al., J. Geom. Phys. 5, No. 3, 317--350 (1988; Zbl 0695.14009)]. In the paper under review, the possible ladders are investigated in the context of abelian categories. In sharp contrast to the triangulated case, a ``half recollement'' in a Grothendieck category, given by the upper two sequences, always extends to a recollement. The paper deals with the possible ladders in a Grothendieck category and provides a complete classification. In particular, it is shown that five layers of a ladder lead to a splitting into the corresponding Serre subcategory and its localization.
