The paper is a survey concerning the solution of a long-standing congruence lattice problem (CLP), i.e.\ the problem whether an algebraic distributive lattice is a congruence lattice of a lattice. It turns out that the topic of congruence lattices of lattices can be divided into two (nearly disjoint) parts: congruence lattices of finite lattices, and congruence lattices of infinite lattices. About the infinite case, the last few years have seen the emergence of many new techniques and results about CLP that the paper intends to survey. The main ideas discussed in the paper are divided into the following different groups: Uniform refinement property; the \(M_{3}\langle L \rangle \) construction; tensor product and box product; extending partial lattices to lattices; ring-theoretical methods; finitely generated varieties of lattices.
