The article is a part of the ongoing work initiated by the first two authors in [``Modular invariants, graphs and \(\alpha\)-induction for nets of subfactors. I.'', Commun. Math. Phys. 197, No. 2, 361-386 (1998; Zbl 0924.46047), Commun. Math. Phys. 200, No. 1, 57-103 (1999), Commun. Math. Phys. 205, No. 1, 183-228 (1999) and continued in ``Chiral Structure of Modular invariants for subfactors. I.--III.'']. In this series of articles, a detailed analysis of the phenomenon of modular invariance in rational conformal field theory is undertaken from the point of view of algebraic quantum field theory via the approach of Longo and Rehren using local nets of type III subfactors of von Neumann algebras of finite Jones index. Here, \(\alpha\)-induction is applied to determine fusion rules and further to define chiral generators. A main result is the construction of a matrix \(Z\) which commutes with the modular generators \(S\) and \(T\) and is known as the modular invariant mass matrix in rational conformal quantum field theory. This matrix is shown to carry structural information about the irreducible representations of the fusion rule algebra.
