    Let $f$ be a real Lebesgue measurable function in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $|f(x)|<\infty$ a.e. (almost everywhere). If $A$ is a bounded measurable set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $0<\gamma <1$ then \[ m^\gamma_f (A) = \inf \big\{ a\in \mathbb{R}: \ \big| \{ y \in A, \, f(y) >a \} \big| <\gamma |A| \big\} \] is called the $\gamma$-median. One has \[ \lim_{r\to 0} m^\gamma_f \big( B(x,r) \big) = f (x), \quad\text{a.e.}, \] as a complement to the classical Lebesgue differentiation theorem, where $B(x,r)$ are balls of radius $r$ centered at $x\in \mathbb{R}^n$. The paper deals with the replacement of $\{B(x,r) \}$ in this assertion by a so-called homothecy invariant Busemann-Feller basis in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The outcome is applied to study the pointwise behaviour of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on metric measure spaces.
