The author constructs a fake projective plane \(K\), i.e., a smooth compact complex surface with the same Betti numbers as the projective plane. He starts with a Dolgachev surface \(Y\) (an elliptic surface with invariants \(p_g = q = 0\)). Then he takes a degree 3 cyclic cover of \(Y\), followed by a degree 7 cyclic cover and a birational modification, to arrive at the fake projective plane \(K\). On the other hand, \textit{M. Ishida} [Tohoku Math J. 40, 367--398 (1988; Zbl 0694.14017)] has proved that Mumford's fake projective plane \(M\) is a degree 21 non-Galois cover of \(Y\). The author remarks that it is not clear whether his \(K\) is related (or isomorphic) to \(M\). The construction is very detailed. In general, it is very hard to construct surfaces of general type with prescribed invariants. See also \textit{G. Prasad} and \textit{S.-K Yeung} [Fake projective planes, \texttt{math.AG/0512115}] for the classification of the fake projective planes.
