This paper analyzes a class of differential equation of the form \[ \begin{aligned} w'(t) = q(v(t))w(t), v'(t) = f(v(t), \\ v(t-\tau(v_t))) w(t-\tau(v_t)),\end{aligned} \] which describes the maturation process of stem cells. Here, \(v_t(s) = v(t+s)\) for \(s<0\) and the delay \(\tau\) depends on \(v_t\). Under certain smoothness conditions, it is shown that the existence of a local semiflow is ensured and the linear variational equation can be specified. Moreover, a criterion for global existence for differential equations with state-dependent delay is proved by adapting an existing result in the available theory.
