The paper concerns block matrices of a particular structure whose eigenvalues can be evaluated as eigenvalues of a matrix polynomials whose size of coefficients is smaller than the size of the given matrix. Special emphasis is put on the case when the aforementioned polynomial is quadratic. In particular, one of the main theorems establishes when the nonzero eigenvalues of a matrix of the form \[ \begin{pmatrix} 0&R_1&0&S_1&0\\ T^*_1&0&T^*_2&0&T^*_3\\ 0&R_2&0&S_2&0\\ U^*_1&0&U^*_2&0&U^*_3\\ 0&R_3&0&S_3&0\\ \end{pmatrix} \] coincide with the nonzero eigenvalues of a quadratic matrix polynomial. From these results there follow some conclusions for the localization of the eigenvalues.
