If \(G\) and \(H\) are residually nilpotent groups, then \(G\) and \(H\) are in the same nilpotent genus if they have the same lower central quotients, that is, \(G/\gamma_{i}(G) \simeq H/\gamma_{i}(H)\) for all \(i \geq 1\). Moreover, \(H\) is para-\(G\) if there exists a monomorphism of \(G\) into \(H\) which induces isomorphisms between the corresponding quotients of their lower central series. \textit{G. Baumslag} et al. [Contemp. Math. 582, 21--37 (2012; Zbl 1283.20032); Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 369, No. 10, 6823--6852 (2017; Zbl 1370.20032)] studied the nilpotent genus of finitely generated residually nilpotent metabelian groups and the motivation for the paper under review is to extend some of their results. The author first considers finitely generated residually nilpotent groups and finds sufficient conditions on the monomorphism so that \(H\) is para-\(G\). He then proves that, for certain polycyclic groups, if \(H\) is para-\(G\), then \(G\) and \(H\) have the same Hirsch length.
