As known, a complete classification of nilpotent Lie algebras is not possible beyond a certain fixed dimension, due to the obstruction imposed by certain tensor identities and their separation into isomorphism classes [\textit{L. Yu. Galitski} and \textit{D. A. Timashev}, ``On classification of metabelian Lie algebras'', J. Lie Theory 9, No. 1, 125--156 (1999; Zbl 0923.17015)]. In this paper the authors consider the classification problem for nilpotent Lie algebras having a two-dimensional commutator ideal and defined over an arbitrary field, provided it contains a sufficient number of elements. The strategy chosen is a generalization of \textit{M. A. Gauger}'s approach [``On the classification of metabelian Lie algebras'', Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 179, 293--329 (1973; Zbl 0267.17015)], enabling the authors to obtain all algebras having dimension notexceeding 11. It is also emphasized that the case of Lie algebras with a non-central 2-dimensional commutator ideal can also be characterized. For the case where the centre happens to be one-dimensional, the resulting structure tensor of the Lie algebra is independent of the base field.
