An infinite number of locally finite semigroup varieties \(S(N_ p)\) is constructed (one for each variety \(N_ p\) of metabelian groups of prime exponent \(p\)) which, together with certain subvarieties, allow to answer a number of questions of basic importance in this field. Namely, they yield infinitely many elements of each of the following classes: 1) finitely generated but not finitely based small varieties; 2) varieties satisfying the ascending but not the descending chain condition for subvarieties; 3) joins and covers of small varieties which themselves are not small; 4) the same for Cross (i.e. finitely based, finitely generated small) varieties; these are in the same time examples of 5) non-group limit varieties (minimal non-finitely based varieties); they are also 6) minimal non-Cross. Furthermore, semigroups used in the construction yield examples of non-finitely (finitely) based finite groups (finite semigroups), which are direct products of two finitely (non-finitely) based ones, respectively.
