    The author considers the ``slice map problem'' (*) \({\mathcal S}\overline\otimes{\mathcal T}=F({\mathcal S},{\mathcal T})\) \(({\mathcal S},{\mathcal T}\) are \(\sigma\)-weakly closed subspaces of \({\mathcal L}(H_ 1)\), \({\mathcal L}(H_ 2)\), respectively; \(F({\mathcal S},{\mathcal T})\) is the Fubini product). He introduces a ``property \(S_ \sigma\)'' for \({\mathcal S}\) (i.e., (*) is valid for all \({\mathcal T})\) and a ``\(\sigma\)-weak approximation property'' which turn out to be equivalent. It is shown that there are separably acting von Neumann factors for each type \(\text{I}_ 1\), \(\text{II}_ \infty\), \(\text{III}_ \lambda\), \(0\leq\lambda\leq 1\), without property \(S_ \sigma\). The slice map problem is also considered for \(C^*\)- algebras.
