This paper addresses the somewhat new and important subject of intensive solvers for boundary integral equations. In particular, the use of preconditioned conjugate gradient methods applied to the solution of the Helmholtz equation via an indirect boundary element procedure is discussed. The inherent convergence difficulty associated to the non- smoothness of the boundary is dealt with by a preconditioning procedure presented and tested in the examples.
