The identification and optimal approximation of stable, continuous-time, possibly infinite-dimensional, SISO systems is considered both on the basis of analytical system representation and as approximation of input- output data. Approximative modelling is performed in the \(H^ \infty\) and Henkel norms, whilst the \(L^ 1\) and \(L^ 2\) norm cases are also discussed. The theory of approximation numbers is used as a tool for identification in a deterministic environment. Laguerre-Fourier series methods and Hankel operator techniques are utilized for the development of the proposed identification method. An illustrative example is included.
