If \(f\) is a function or distribution on the circle, let \(f^ \pm\) denote the distribution obtained by changing the signs of the Fourier coefficients of \(f\) ``at random''. The notation \(\Lambda_ \alpha^{p,q}(\mathbb{T})\) refers to the space of \(2\pi\)-periodic elements of the Besov space \(\Lambda_ \alpha^{p,q}(\mathbb{R})\) [for the definition of which see \textit{E. M. Stein}: ``Singular integrals and differentiability properties of functions'' (1970; Zbl 0207.135)]. The following question is considered: For what values of the parameters does \(f\in\Lambda_ \alpha^{p,q}\) imply that \(f^ \pm\in\Lambda_ \beta^{r,s}\) almost surely? Various results are proved which resolve the question for all \(p,q,r,s\in[1,\infty]\) and \(\alpha,\beta\in\mathbb{R}\) except for the case \(1<p<2\), \(\beta=\alpha+1/2-1/p\), \(r=s=\infty\), and \(p'\leq q<\infty\) \((1/p+1/p'=1)\); in this case the question remains open.
